Omega 3 is polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). It is called omega 3 because it is at the 3rd position of carbon first double bond at the methyl end. Omega 3 includes DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid).
Omega 3 is derived from two natural sources. DHA and EPA came from the oil of fatty fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna and anchovies. This kind of fish eats algae and plankton that is rich with these acids.
Another Omega 3 fatty acids source is plant source. ALA is derived from green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils (canola, flaxseed, corn oil and soybean), soy and tofu, and nuts (walnuts and almonds).
